Grief. Such a small, simple word for one of the most complex human experiences. When you lose a loved one, your world shrinks to that pain. How can life go on?

1. God is Your Strength

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. – Psalm 73:26

Grief makes us feel weak. We might have trouble functioning in everyday life. We need a supportive community, time to process our emotions, and Bible verses about grief we can cling to. In this psalm, the Psalmist testifies that his body, emotions, and willpower are weak.

If you’re grieving, can you relate to this feeling? You might lack energy for tasks. Maybe you can’t smile and laugh like you used to. You might feel like you’re going through the motions. The Psalmist knew what this was like. In this passage, we can see that God gives the Psalmist the strength to keep going.

The Psalmist also calls God his “portion,” meaning that his relationship with God is enough for him in this life, even when he is lacking in other areas. That might not be something you feel right now but cling to the truth that God is enough for you.

2. God is Your Light

You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. – Psalm 18:28

4. God Renews

When we are at our weakest, we have nowhere else to go but God. At our lowest point, he is there, and when we can look to him with expectation, he will strengthen us again.

Sometimes you’re in such pain that you feel like you’ve lost hope. 5. God Cares

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants. – Psalm 116:15

6. God Promises a Future

For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’ – Revelation 7:17

This comforting Bible verse for death has two tender word pictures of God with his children in heaven. The first picture portrays Jesus as both lamb and shepherd. He was the sacrificial lamb for our sins, and now he is on the throne, leading us as a shepherd. He takes us to the living water, the source of eternal life.

The second picture is of God as a comforting, tenderhearted father, bending over us to wipe away our tears. If you have a child, you know how much they are comforted and reassured by their parents when they are sad or hurt. God promises to comfort us in the same personal and loving way when we are with him forever.

7. God Gives Joy, Peace, and Hope

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 15:13

The weakness of grief is a good time to remind ourselves that our standing with God is not based on our performance, but on his grace. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:38-40

Although death may separate us from those we love here on this earth, it cannot separate us from God’s love. No matter what happens, he loves us with an everlasting love in Christ, and that will not change, even if we can’t sense his love, or if we’re walking through a time of darkness and loss.
