How the Bible Can Give Hope to a Broken Family

Orange County Christian Counseling

Family CounselingSpiritual Development

In a broken world where it seems that heartache is around every corner, the Bible can bring us the calming presence of peace. A broken family can feel like a broken spirit. Whether your family is torn apart by abuse, betrayal, addiction, anger, lies, or grief, you can find solace in your Savior.

However, the only way to find solace and develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is to read Scripture. The entire Bible gives you glimpses of God’s character and the promise of Jesus to a broken world.

Use the Bible to heal your hurting heart and your broken family.

The Bible Promotes Forgiveness

Forgiveness in this world should mirror God’s forgiveness of our sins. Yet, we often struggle to extend forgiveness to others when they have wronged us. For example, the adult child who has lied, or the spouse who has betrayed you. Forgiveness frees you from the bondage of bitterness and anger. Matthew 6:14-15 reminds us that it is essential to God that we forgive others, just as He forgives us.

There will be situations where you cannot reconcile with someone who has hurt you. Work on forgiving them anyway and set yourself free. Remember that as long as we confess and repent to God, seeking His face and turning from our wicked ways, God will forgive us, as the Bible states in 2 Chronicles 7:14.

Scripture Gives Hope for Healing

Whether it is a broken family or a broken heart, Scripture reminds us in Psalm 147:3 that God heals the brokenhearted. We can still hold onto the hope that God will heal us physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and relationally. God’s healing fills our spirits with joy. There is a renewing of our minds, even when our bodies grow old. We can lean into Jesus and reach for that joy.

Have you asked God for healing in every area of your life? According to Romans 8:28, if you love God, you can depend on Him to work things out for your good if you are called to His purpose for you.

The Word Confirms God’s Presence

How the Bible Can Give Hope to a Broken FamilyPeople may leave your life. They may go by choice or death, but God will never leave you. His presence remains as long as you are one of His. If you have chosen to follow Christ, then His Spirit will never abandon you. As far back as the Old Testament, the writer of Lamentations (Lamentations 3:23) praised God for His faithfulness, knowing that God’s mercies begin afresh each morning.

Jesus told the disciples to teach followers to obey everything He told them with the promise, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20, NIV) We know from reading Paul’s words in Romans 8:38-39 that there is nothing you can do or that someone else can do, or any supernatural powers can do, that will ever separate you from God’s love once you have become a child of God. His presence will remain with you. Turn to Him, lean into His promises, and pray Scripture over your life.

Christian Family Counseling

A broken family needs the hope, healing, and peace that only God can give. Let a Christian family counselor help your family through forgiveness and reconciliation. If reconciliation is not possible, your counselor can walk you through the grieving process to a level of acceptance that will help you move forward with God by your side.
